reduce woocommerce abandoned cart

Executive Summary

Cart abandonment is one of the most frustrating profit leaks for any ecommerce stores, especially in niches like online furniture, where customers usually take a lot of time and thought before completing a purchase.

Our client’s store has steady traffic. The recurring challenge was that shoppers viewed the products, added them to their carts, displayed purchase intent, then left before completing checkout.

The store had no automated system to re-engage those customers after they left. As a result, potentially recoverable purchase opportunities were dependent on customers returning to the store on their own.

The objective was therefore to introduce an automated abandoned-cart recovery system by customizing Recarto Abandoned Cart Recovery for WooCommerce plugin. The solution was designed to identify abandoned carts, re-engage customers through a structured email sequence, provide targeted purchase incentives, and give the business greater visibility into cart activity and customer product interest.

Our three-month reviews show a reduction in cart drop-off rate from more than 85% to 81%. This improvement is a 26% relative increase in successful cart conversions.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was a drop-off rate of more than 85% from cart to completed purchases.

Without a recovery mechanism, there was no structured way to bring these customers back into the purchasing journey.

The second challenge was creating highly customized recovery communications. The client wanted the notifications to reflect the store's modern furniture brand and customer experience rather than relying on generic, fixed templates available within the plugin.

The recovery emails also needed to follow established email marketing standards and best practices, including clear messaging, consistent branding, readable layouts, prominent calls to action, and appropriate promotional messaging.

This created three primary requirements:

  • Capture abandoned-cart activity reliably.
  • Provide a structured, multi-stage recovery workflow.
  • Deliver brand-consistent emails following industry-standard email design and communication best practices.

Key Technical Implementations

Our analysis of purchase abandonment in this store showed that the best recovery strategy would be a sequence of three customer notifications rather than a single reminder.

The sequence was designed to address customers at different stages of purchase consideration:

  • Initial recovery: Remind the customer about the products they had already added to their cart.
  • Incentive-based recovery: Provide an additional reason to complete the purchase through a limited-time 10% discount.
  • Final recovery: Provide a final opportunity to return and complete the purchase with a stronger, short-duration 15% discount.

Achieving this kind of personalized recovery sequence needs customization of out-of-box plugins, and it is a core part of our WooCommerce development services.

The implementation was organized into two primary stages using Recarto – Abandoned Cart Recovery for WooCommerce.

Tracking Abandoned Cart Sessions

The default mechanism in Recarto – Abandoned Cart Recovery plugin identified and retained the abandoned-cart information. This created the foundation for automated recovery rather than relying on manual follow-up.

When customers add products to their WooCommerce cart, the system captured the relevant cart information so that the abandoned-cart workflow could identify customers who did not complete their purchase.

The captured information also provided greater visibility into the products customers were considering, allowing the business to understand cart activity at the product level.

Automated Customer Recovery Emails

The client preferred email as the primary communication channel, so we developed three customized notification email templates that looked and felt like a natural extension of the brand.

This ensured the recovery emails felt like an integrated part of the store's customer experience, and not generic automated notifications.

The second and third reminder emails also offered the customers discounts. A unique 8-character alphanumeric coupon code was generated for the customer and included in the email. Each code was valid for the specified limited time and could only be redeemed with the original email ID associated with the abandoned cart.

1: Initial Reminder Prompt immediate checkout 2 hours None N/A
2: Re-engagement Incentivize purchase completion 5 days 10% 7 days
3: Last Call Maximize last-chance recovery 13 days 15% 24 hours

The email templates were designed following industry best practices to ensure they are mobile-responsive, on-brand, visually clean, and highly focused on driving shoppers to complete their purchase.

The Results: 26% Increase in Cart Conversions

Previously, this modern furniture store had no automated system to bring back abandoned-cart customers. The new Recarto recovery flow converted abandoned-cart activity into a structured recovery journey with a progressive incentive structure.

The implementation created the following operational and customer-engagement improvements:

  • The cart drop-off rate decreased from over 85% to 81%, resulting in a 26% relative increase in successful conversions.
  • Replaced manual follow-ups with an automated system that identifies and targets abandoned carts.
  • Re-engagement is through a structured three-part email sequence with progressive discounts, rather than a single generic reminder.
  • The emails match the store's visual identity instead of looking like default, rigid plugin templates.
  • The store can now track cart activity to see exactly which furniture products are abandoned most frequently.

This workflow establishes a foundation that can be optimized over time and eventually expanded to include SMS and push notifications.
